Top 10 socially kind Mothers Day Gifts that give back

Don’t go buying Mum another pair of fluffy slippers this Mothers Day – instead, what about giving a gift that gives twice.  A beautiful gift for mum AND a socially kind story behind it – there are lots of perfect gifts for mum here including shoes, jewellery, cookbooks, micro-lending, bras, lipsticks and more!  Make your 2012 Mothers Day gift really count this year…here are my top ten socially kind mummy gifts:

Mums: send this post to the father of your children as a big hint.
Dads / children old enough to read: your welcome.
My husband: I would like some gumboots please!

1. Sseko Designs – a not-just-for-profit where every sandal has a story
If you are interested in the effect of educating and empowering women in global communities, then you will LOVE the story behind Sseko \say-ko\ Designs.
Sseko \say-ko\ Designs was created to help young women in Uganda continue their education. Many young women simply cannot afford education, Sseko Designs employ young women to live and work together, while earning money that will go directly towards their university education. These women will not make sandals forever, they will go on to be doctors, lawyers, politicians, writers and teachers that will bring change and unification to a country divided and ravished by a 22 year-long war.
Go to the Sseko Designs website here, follow on facebook and twitter.

2. Foundation 18 – beautiful things that support an orphanage
Foundation 18, Indonesia was established by Australian humanitarian and conservationist Cate Bolt in June 2010. Based in the north of Bali in the small village of Ringdikit Foundation 18 runs an orphanage / group home and education outreach program. The Foundation 18 orphanage is currently home to 12 girls aged between 3 and 14 years old. All funds raised via the Foundation 18 Etsy Store go to directly to running the group home and education outreach program.  There are gorgeous necklaces, bowls, purse hangers and blankets for sale priced between $20-$100.  Too many perfect gifts for mum.

3. TOMS shoes – #oneforone
You may have noticed TOMS is a bit of a favourite of mine, I have posted about TOMS before, and I have one pair of fire-engine red TOMS wedges that I wear with pride and another pair on the way. Basically, TOMS sells shoes and glasses, for every pair sold, they give another pair away to a child in need.  Why not give Mum a TOMS gift voucher this mothers day and let her shop online to her hearts content?  Shoes range in price from $50 – $100 and delivery to Australia is only $20.

5. Mummy’s Wish – helping mums with cancer
Mummy’s Wish is a charity dedicated to helping mums with cancer.  Why not make a donation this Mothers Day helping a mum who is facing the fight of her life.  A $30 donation will buy a voice-recordable teddy bear for a mum to give her kids, $50 will buy a tank of fuel for a regional mum commuting for her cancer treatment, and $75 will get a sick mum a few hours of cleaning.  Every dollar will make a difference.  The perfect gift for your mum who doesn’t need more stuff.

6. Marysville Cookbook – helping a town recover
Saturday 7th February 2009, now known as Black Saturday, saw the state of Victoria devastated by uncontrollable bushfires. Many towns were wiped from the map, thousands of buildings were lost and 173 people perished.  The Marysville Cookbook was lovingly compiled by Heather Samsa, who herself lost everything in the fires, and by selling the Marysville Cookbook, has so far given away $5500 to local community groups.  Heather has pledged $10 from every copy sold to be given back to Marysville.  $35 AUD get you a copy of the cookbook incl. postage.  Mums can never have too many cookbooks!

7. KIVA  – loans that change lives
Another great gift for the mum who ‘has it all’ buy mum a gift of micro-lending and buy her a KIVA  gift card.  KIVA have made gifting pretty easy; you can send your Kiva Card by email, snail mail, post it on mum’s Facebook wall or print and deliver it yourself. Let mum choose the person, the business and the country.  Read more about my #effortforothers 2012 goal here and how you (and mum) can get involved!

Like shoes and cookbooks, most mums LOVE lipsticks, especially ones that are socially kind!  MAC cosmetics have a fabulous range of lipsticks called VIVA GLAM, and 100% of the sales go directly to the MAC Aid Fund which has raised in excess of $202M USD. Read my full blog post about it here.
