I have said it before, and I will say it again: you dont have to be rich to be a philanthropist. As nice as it would be to be Bill and Melinda Gates or Chuck Feeney and give away billions of dollars to charity, this simply is not possible for the everyday person.
However there are LOTS of ways to live your life as a philanthropist that wont cost you a cent; you can give blood, give your time, become a mentor, or….
become an online advocate for a charity or good cause.
Yes, a very easy and meaningful way for you to help a charity, not-for-profit or good cause, is to follow them on social media, sharing their messages on your facebook profile, retweeting their messages on twitter, forwarding their newsletters to your friends, or simply telling others about the important work they do.
A great example of the online power of the people, is GIVIT.org – an online donation portal, connecting people who have, to those who have not. Founded in 2010, by social entrepreneur Juliette Wright, GIVIT has partnered with over 520 charities in Australia directly helping over 55,000 people. GIVIT.org relies heavily on its supporter base, successfully harnessing the power of word of mouth and online advocates. Last year GIVIT.org.au launched in Western Australia, Victoria and New South Wales, and GIVIT.org now urgently needs more donors in these states, and have launched a campaign called Donate-A-Friend – a campaign working from the ground up, through word of mouth, with people helping people.
Through Donate-A-Friend GIVIT.org.au are asking people to contact a friend, colleague or family member who live in Western Australia, Victoria or New South Wales and ask them to register at givit.org.au.
Their goal is to attract 300 more (potential) donors from each state Australia and need your help in getting the message “out there”, you can help GIVIT.org.au achieve this by simply signing up at givit.org.au
